This is one of the most common questions we hear before someone's first class — and it's a fair one. Partner dances like Salsa and Bachata are literally named for how they're danced with someone else, so it makes sense to wonder whether you'll feel out of place showing up alone.
You won't. The vast majority of our students walk in without a partner, and our classes are designed around exactly that.
How our group classes work
In every group class at SaGa Dancers Studio, we rotate partners throughout the lesson. That means you'll practice each new step or pattern with several different people over the course of the class, guided by the instructor.
Rotating partners isn't just a workaround for solo students — it's how good social dancers are made. Dancing with different leads and follows teaches you to feel connection, timing, and communication with anyone on the floor, not just one familiar person.
What if I want to come with my partner?
You're always welcome to. Couples are common in our classes, and you can absolutely stay together during rotations if you prefer. Many couples actually enjoy the rotation because it strengthens the fundamentals faster — and then dancing together afterwards feels noticeably better.
Will I have to touch strangers?
Partner dancing involves a light, respectful frame — usually a hand connection and, depending on the style, a hand on the shoulder or upper back. Our instructors set the tone in every class: consent, comfort, and good hygiene are the norm. If you'd ever prefer not to rotate on a given day, that's fine too. Just let the instructor know.
What if there aren't enough leads or follows?
Class balance varies from night to night. When numbers are uneven, instructors adjust rotations, dance with students directly, or teach material that works well without a partner (footwork, styling, timing drills). No one sits out.

You don't need a partner to start dancing at SaGa. You just need to show up. Within a class or two, you'll know several people by name, and within a few weeks you'll be dancing socially with all of them.
